Plan plant spacing and canopy density

Enter rectangular canopy dimensions in feet and desired center-to-center plant spacing in inches. The calculator estimates how many complete spacing intervals fit along each side, then multiplies the rows and columns.

An 8 by 4 foot canopy at 24-inch spacing creates a 4 by 2 grid, or eight estimated plant positions. Each position represents about 4 square feet of canopy area.

Spacing depends on the training plan

Plant count alone does not determine canopy quality. Cultivar structure, container size, vegetative time, topping, low-stress training, trellising, and pruning all affect the space each plant needs. Fewer plants can fill the same area with more vegetative growth, while a higher count may shorten veg time but increase maintenance.

Allow working and equipment clearance

This simple grid uses the full dimensions entered. Subtract aisles, wall clearance, fans, humidifiers, irrigation equipment, and inaccessible corners before entering the active canopy size. Avoid placing plants where they block safe access or airflow.

Check legal limits

Plant-count and cultivation rules vary by location and may include household, property, medical, or flowering-plant limits. A physical capacity estimate does not override local law.

• Check mature canopy width, not only young plant size.
• Leave room for inspection and pest management.
• Reassess airflow as the canopy fills.
