Use this calculator to estimate the total volume of growing media required for a set of containers. Enter the number of pots, the planned fill volume for each pot, and an extra percentage for settling, mixing losses, top-ups, or small spills. Results are shown in both liters and US gallons so you can compare container labels and bag sizes.

Eight 5-liter containers require 40 liters before any allowance. Adding 10% raises the planning total to 44 liters, which is about 11.6 US gallons.

Nominal pot size versus actual fill volume

A container labeled 5 gallons does not always accept exactly 5 gallons of substrate at the fill height you use. Tapered walls, rounded bottoms, drainage space, and leaving room below the rim all affect actual volume. Nursery pot naming conventions can also differ from ordinary liquid measurements.

For the most accurate plan, fill one representative container to your normal level and measure the media used. Enter that measured amount as the per-container volume instead of relying only on the printed pot size.

How much extra media should you include?

An extra allowance of 5% to 15% is a useful planning range for many projects, but the right value depends on the material and workflow. Loose mixes may settle after watering, compressed coco expands after hydration, and custom blends can lose a small amount during mixing and transfer. Include more extra if you expect future top-dressing or transplanting.

Volume is not weight

This tool calculates volume, not bag weight. Two products with the same volume can have very different weights because of moisture, particle size, aeration amendments, and density. Compare the result with the volume printed on product packaging, and follow the manufacturer’s hydration instructions for compressed media.

Practical planning tips

• Measure one real container at your normal fill line.
• Keep amendments separate unless their volume is part of your mix.
• Round up to whole bags when purchasing.
• Store leftover dry media clean and protected from moisture.

The estimate helps with purchasing and mixing, but actual filled volume should be checked during setup.
